Cherthala is a town in Alappuzha district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is located on the Kochi- Alappuzha National Highway 47, about 36 kilometers north of district headquarters, Alappuzha city. Cherthala is believed to be an ancient settlement and has been mentioned in several works like Thatathwa Purana, Chera Bhoomi of Plassey copper plate, and Thrikkariyoor inscriptions. The town has several temples, churches, and mosques related to the history of the place.

Cherthala has a rich cultural and political history. The Chambakulam Illam, believed to be a human settlement before 800 A.D., is said to have been built in the land gifted by the erstwhile ruler of Venadu for an Orthodox Iyer Brahmin, Narayanan Peruman who arrived Cherthala with his disciples for permanent settlement. Cherthala is also suited to be called as “The Land of Looms and Lores”. It has always played an important role in elevating the living standards of The State.
