Pala city is the oldest city in Kerala with lots of history since the first century. It is located beside the River Meenachil. This city was internationally acknowledged centuries back for its trade and business in various spices. Christian culture is the most popular and followed religion here with two Christian pilgrim centers here.

Pala had the first bus on its wheel in Kerala in 1930, the steam bus bought from Germany and the mechanics came from madras (Chennai) to teach how to operate it. Its called as Meenachil motor service, a dream come true of 18-year boy Mr Joseph Augustine. Inauguration of the bus was grand and like today’s metro or monorail, people came from long distances to meet their new form of life-changing vehicle.

The next wonder of Pala is the Pala Bank started by the same, Mr Augustine. The first bank of Kerala which even had its branches in Delhi, the capital of India. The bank was a great success all over India. It had nearly 35 branches all over India and was closed in 1960 with respect to the Reserve bank of India’s complaint against this bank.

Christian culture is strong in Pala. It is believed that St. Thomas visited Pala and his missionary service gave birth to many evangelists and the church formed by them is the Pala St. Thomas cathedral. And the second one, St. Alphonse’s cathedral where the tomb of mother Alphonse is present is visited by millions of pilgrims every year.

Talking about travelling around here. The roadways are really aesthetic and maintained with beautiful flowering plants on its either side adds beauty to Pala immensely.
